Ancient Hills · Sacred Temples · Leopards & Wildlife
It is different forest and it gives different experience; most people think that Girnar as a mountain of temples and a pilgrim’s staircase. Fewer know that the forested slopes and surroundings terrain of Girnar have been formally recognised as a wildlife sanctuary, it is a protected landscape that is ecologically connected to the broader Gir region and supports its own resident population of leopard, sloth beer, hyena and diverse birdlife.
Girnar covers significant part of the forest hillside below the peak complex that links the mountain’s forests that create a wildlife corridor that links mountain’s forest to the wider Saurashtra landscape. Safari access into the Girnar zone separately from the Gir jungle safari. Gypsy drives through dry deciduous terrain at the foot of the Girnar massif, with dramatic vertical backdrop of the sacred peaks rising behind treeline.
Leopard sightings at Girnar tend to be more frequent at dawn and dusk near water sources at the forest base. Sloth bear activity peaks in the fruiting season — particularly when jamun and ber are producing, typically around May and June. The sanctuary's bird list includes species less commonly encountered inside Gir proper, making Girnar a genuine addition to a serious birdwatching itinerary rather than simply a visual backdrop.
